Paper stock options
Selecting the right paper stock can be tricky, as it ultimately defines the feel of your entire book. Uncoated paper stock has a rough, natural feeling; it's recommended for traditional books without imagery. Coated paper stock is able to reflect more light and provides a smoother feel, making it ideal for lookbooks, photography books, comics, and children's books.

Interior book text and image printing
In order to create a perfectly printed book, it's important to remember that what's inside matters, too. Your interior book layout is all part of the process. Make a professional-quality book from the inside out by utilizing custom interior book text and fully colorized image printing.
Black & white interior text & image printing
Black text printing should be selected for books that contain NO color printing inside the body of the book. With this formatting option, all text and images will be printed in black & white.
Full color interior text & image printing
Choose color text printing for books containing any color printing inside the body of the book. With this option any images or text that require color printing will be printed in color.
End sheets
End sheets (also known as end papers) are the pages at the beginning and the end of a hardcover book. They are usually made from a separate, heavier stock than the stock used for the interior pages. End sheets are glued to the inside of the book's front and back covers. They attach to the bound-together pages (the page block) and hold the page block to the hardcover case.
Color options for end sheets:
Softcover with interior cover printing
Printing on the inside of a book cover lets you add text and images to the inner front and back covers of your softcover book. Use this extra space creatively for dedications, author bios, reviews, advertisements, or anything else you'd like to include. It's the perfect way to make a lasting impression!
Get startedFrequently asked questions
What is the difference between saddle stitch and perfect binding?
A saddle stitch involves folding a single sheet or multiple sheets and using staples to secure them along the fold. It is ideal for a thin booklet or pamphlets. In contrast, perfect binding uses adhesive to attach a cover to a book block, which is ideal for books with a larger number of pages. While saddle stitch is excellent for magazines or short projects, perfect binding provides a more professional, permanent aesthetic suitable for a home library. OnPress utilizes advanced machines to ensure every perfect-bound volume is durable, professional, and built to last, providing a reliable alternative for your project needs.
Can OnPress produce books using spiral binding?
OnPress does not offer spiral binding or coil-based options. Spiral binding is typically used for items that require the user to flip pages 360 degrees, such as cookbooks, guides, or training manuals. Because this binding requires specialized equipment and coiling machines, it differs significantly from the adhesive-based processes used by traditional book printers. If your portfolios or binders require the ability to lay completely flat for frequent hand-use, you may need a print shop that specializes in coil-based methods. OnPress focuses on traditional softcover and hardcover binding for projects that require a classic, high-end presentation and long-term shelf stability.
Why is hardcover binding preferred for professional projects?
Hardcover binding is the gold standard for projects that demand durability and prestige. Unlike a booklet held together by thin wire, a hardcover case provides a structural shield that protects the interior contents for decades. Whether you're publishing a novel, a company history, or an academic volume, the structural integrity of a case-bound book ensures it survives frequent handling in a library or office. While options like saddle stitch are efficient for lightweight magazines, they lack the permanent, authoritative weight of a true hardcover book. Choosing this method signals a commitment to quality that readers can physically feel the moment they pick it up.
How do I prepare my files for a hardcover book?
Preparing files for hardcover printing is more complex than a simple booklet. You must account for the "bleed," which allows the artwork to extend to the edges, and the specific requirements for the end sheets. Unlike a single sheet used in a folded project, a hardcover requires careful alignment of the cover art with the book block. Ensure your spine width is calculated correctly based on your paper choice and total page count. OnPress offers detailed guidelines to ensure your design is print-ready, helping you avoid common errors that might occur when utilizing complex industrial binding equipment during the final case-wrapping stage.
Are there specific benefits to Smyth sewn binding?
Smyth sewn binding is a premium technique where the book block sections are sewn together with thread before being glued into the hardcover book. This method is significantly more durable than standard adhesive binding and allows the book to lay flatter. It is the perfect choice for cookbooks or large reference guides that need to remain open while in use. While it is more labor-intensive than the stitching used in magazines or thin pamphlets, the investment in a sewn spine prevents the pages from detaching over time. It offers the best of both worlds: the beauty of a hardcover with the functionality of lay-flat pages.
How do I choose between different cover finishes?
Your cover finish depends on the intended use. For items like high-end portfolios, a soft-touch matte finish provides a sophisticated, tactile feel. For magazines or items that feature high-contrast photography, a gloss lamination helps colors pop. If your project involves a single sheet cover (like a thin brochure), you might prefer something lighter. However, for a professional hardcover, a high-quality matte or soft-touch finish often provides the most elegant look. Always consider the tactile experience of the reader; a finish that resists fingerprints is often preferred for reference books or manuals that will be handled by many different people.
Can I add custom elements to my hardcover book?
Yes. Customizing your hardcover book involves more than just selecting the type of binding. You can add a dust jacket or utilize custom end sheets to give your work a unique flair. These elements add significant value to items like portfolios or limited-edition guides. While simple staples or basic stitching might suffice for a quick handout, a custom hardcover transforms your documents into an heirloom. OnPress allows for various decorative finishes that make your work stand out on any shelf, ensuring that your project receives the high-end treatment it deserves.
Why choose professional book printing over office equipment?
Standard office machines are designed for temporary reports or simple pamphlets, not high-quality book production. When you use professional printing equipment, you get access to superior paper stocks, precision trimming, and reliable binding methods like Smyth sewing. A professionally produced hardcover book has a professional spine width and top-grade adhesive that prevents page loss. If your project, such as a cookbook or a corporate history, is intended to be a lasting record, the skilled craft involved in the production process is undeniable. It ensures that your number of pages remains secure, creating a volume that feels substantial and durable to the reader.
What is the role of end sheets in a hardcover book?
End sheets are the bridge between the hardcover case and the book block. In a professional binding process, they are glued to the inside covers and the first/last pages of the book. While a simple booklet or stapled document does not require these, they are mandatory for any quality hardcover project. They provide the strength needed to hold the pages inside the case. Whether you are producing portfolios or formal guides, selecting high-quality end sheet paper adds a hidden layer of elegance and durability. They are the hallmark of a professionally manufactured volume, distinguishing your work from common, mass-produced items found in commercial stores.
